Ideas Worth Spreading

tedx

On Saturday 6 March, 500 + people descended upon the Qld State Library to listen to some remarkable speakers sharing "ideas worth spreading" at the TEDx Brisbane Event.

ACID was proud to be among the amazing companies represented, and excited to bump into so many friends and family of ACID.

What is TEDx? Well let's start with - What is TED?

"TED is an annual event where some of the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. "TED" stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. In fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it "the ultimate brain spa" and "a four-day journey into the future." (from the TEDx Brisbane website)

If you've never seen a TED talk, I urge you to find 18 minutes some time soon and go be inspired.

So, back to what is TEDx? "TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience."

To see a run down of the program from the Brisbane Event check out the website.

With so many incredible speakers it's hard to pick just a few highlights to share with you so for an excellent write up of the day please head over to the Brisbane Creative Industries blog and see what our lovely friend Hannah Suarez had to say about the event.

Many thanks to Paul Fairweather and Carl Lindgren for hosting the event and to all involved, it was a tremendous, inspiring, exciting and idea-filled day!

Remixing Realities

viveka

Congratulations to Viveka Weiley, one of ACID's scholarship students, who has been selected as one of only 8, to present his work at the CRCA Conference in Alice Springs in May as an 'Early Career Scientist'.

Viveka will be speaking on "Remixing Realities: Designing Mixed-Reality Place for Collaborative Creativity...forget Virtual Worlds, now we're remixing reality".

We wish him all the best; he is in the running to win a cash prize of $1,500 from the CRC Association for personal development, judged by an audience ballot. Chookas Viv, enjoy the red centre!

Everyone loves Jam

You may have heard the exciting news that Jam2jam XO for the One Laptop per Child machine is now available for download.

The software had 2031 downloads in its first fortnight, and is now the 4th most downloaded application for the OLPC worldwide and the 'top download' for Sugar Labs, the official OLPC software site.

Look out world - prepare to be jammed! :)

An Audience with Syd Mead

On the Tuesday 30th March a QUT lecture theatre was packed to the rafters with excited creatives hanging on the every word from a gentleman who was, true to form, an inspiration.

An audience with Syd Mead, hosted by the Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation, was a brilliant opportunity for a guided tour through some of the personal collection of the extraordinary works from his 55-year career as the most celebrated concept artist of the 20th century.

For a little more information check out this recent interview in the Australian newspaper.

Mr Mead's experience and lifetime of knowledge were invaluable; but from the many things I will take away from that lecture this one I will share (apologies for paraphrasing) "a million dollar computer and a dumb idea just equals a million dollar dumb idea".

So, who's up for some Blade Runner?
